Data analysis

Before dc I had a pretty interesting career in economics using large data and communising with non-economists. Now all 3 DC are at secondary school so I feel freer to take on a new challenge but I haven't worked on datasets for 15years so am completely out of date (I have had a term time job for the last 7 years).

I really want to work in data analysis/information , in a role between software coders /programmers and the end users. I don't plan to become a coder but I think I need to become very proficient in SQL which I'm happy to spend lots of time on but it all feels catch 22. All the vacancies I see need experience but how do I get to use the programmes/datasets to practice? I'm sure the best way to learn is by working with data but if i train there are so many courses I don't know where to begin. I'm in the SE but think central London is too far to commute. Do you have any advice? It all feels so out of reach.

There are programs (educational programs) available on the Coursera platform, among others from the John Hopkins university I believe. You might want to check it out. (Google)
