Im sorry if this is in the wrong place (its long too) but I'm sure this cant be right. Im a barmaid in a sports club. Ive been there nearly 5 years (I for a year left due to sciatica and the fact I could barely walk and returned a year ago). Not that it matters in this case but Im a highly experienced barmaid with over 20 years behind me.
The committee decided to appoint a new bar manager and assistant. It went to a woman who has been there over 15 years. Before she got the job she could be very aggressive in her manner to staff and customers. We get phone calls asking if she is working. If she is then people wont come in. She is very abrupt and it depends on whether shes having a good day if she acknowledges me or not. Anyway thats to give you a taste of who im dealing with.
She has told us that shes cutting our hours down but shes hiring more people. I only do 12 hours a week as it is. Shes told me if I dont like it then I can do one Hmm. The way she spoke to me the last time I saw her was horrible. She just unleashes information and doesnt give you chance to respond. I did respond to one point I didnt agree with and she told me not to give her attitude Shock. Im a 39 year old mother of 3. She was given the job on the understanding it was a 6 month trial and she had to tone down her attitude. I work very hard and clean from top to bottom when not busy. I know this all seems disjointed but I really dont know what to do.

She sounds delightful Hmm

I'd report your concerns to the committee- they were obviously aware of the potential from what you've said. Otherwise I'd be looking elsewhere. If she cuts your hours down from 12 you're barely going to be there anyway.

”She was given the job on the understanding it was a 6 month trial and she had to tone down her attitude.”

Are the committee aware that she is still being like this? If they are, presumably her trial won’t be successful.

Not saying you're wrong OP, but do you actually know what her conditions of employment were? The reason I'm questioning this, is that if she has been there 15 years she must be doing something right.

Sometimes people's "Management style" is prickly and they aren't into pleasantries - granted, it isn't easy to work for someone like that.

I'd say you're on a hiding to nothing and have one of two choices Either

  • try to put aside your dislike of her and for 12 hours a week just 'head down' and do what you're doing (as you have a good work ethic) or
  • find something else and hope the management style is better.
