Rearranging an interview

Advice needed!

DH has an interview mid March in another part of the UK that can only be flown to. However he's got a meeting at his current job that he's presenting at that day and it would be impossible to miss. The interview email stated that interviews can only be rearranged in "exceptional circumstances".

Does this seem unreasonable? What can he say to them? We really want to move and this would be a great job.

Help!

Has he asked them if he can have a different interview date?
If they say no, he’ll have to take a punt and work out if it’s worth it to not be in work that day (if he’s leaving anyway?) and do a sickie?

Normally a reasonable recruiter would give a choice of options for the candidate to select from not inflict one date on them, because they know that if someone is in employment they have commitments like meetings, client engagements, and even planned annual leave that are difficult if not impossible to change.

So, no it does not seem reasonable that they are being so rigid and inflexible with your DH particularly if they are trying to attract him, and knowing he is currently in employment and presumably in a position of responsibility.

If he cannot change his meeting, he needs to give them a specific alternative for example:

Dear Xxx

Thank you for inviting me to attend interview on xxx date. Unfortunately I am due to present to a major client in our offices on the same day.

I would appreciate if you could consider holding my interview the following day, at a time convenient to you, as I am keen to attend the interview but also want to ensure I meet my commitment to my current employer"

He might as well use it as an opportunity to blow his own trumpet and show what a loyal and responsible employee he is!
