HRs about?

I've resigned from a HUGELY stressful, well paid job to go to study.

The plan is that I'll be off over the summer and settle DD into school and then start in September. Very open about this and haven't had a negative comment about it - lots of people in work very jealous (though the reason I can afford to do this is due to sad circumstances which involve a significant inheritance)

However, the week after I was (on the same day) prescribed new medication for anxiety and involved in a very traumatic accident.

I spoke to my boss the next day and explained the situation, very openly.

I self certificated for the first week and have been signed off ever since.

I also have a week longer on my sick line.

My worry is that the timing looks well dodgy (i.e. resign and I CBA to work my notice) however it's genuine.

I'm due to finish on 6th April and have 7.5 days holiday to take.... I also need to be in employment at the end of March because I need my bonus payout.

I can't face going back. I start shaking when I think about it and I'm mortified and scared re how I can walk in the door.

Question: and sorry for the long post - can this jeopardise my reference? I'm going to be in the same industry but not the same bit. Should I force myself to go back for the short period of time?

Not in HR but I'd keep engaging with your boss. Would you feel able to write your handover notes from home?

SleepingInNewYork · 23/02/2018 13:52

The only way this could jeopardise your reference would be if a future employee asked how many days you had taken as sick. However, at least you would currently be able to counterargue saying it was one instance.

Your doctor has signed you off which is very different to going awol or having lots of odd days off here and there. I hope you feel much better soon.

Thank you both

Handover notes are irrelevant as the job is so fast paced I have no idea what I'd be working on this week if I was in.

And thanks Sleeping, I hope so too. Getting there, I think slowly.

it's unlikely for employers now to give anything other than factual information on references due to comeback, if you have a hr department maybe ask them what the policy is on references?
