is there any sort of objective measuring/assessment I can refer to for US universities? I know nothing about them but have an interview for some teaching work in London for one - I have no idea if it's the equivalent of Felpersham University or something more like Manchester (I do know it's not Oxford or Cambridge). anyone know how I can find out?

There are many many different rankings for US universities. You can find some info here
US News & World report is best known but I believe it only includes better known universities. Not sure how easy it is to get hold of these reports in the UK though.
Otherwise check out this

there is a book called something like Study in the US - Guide to American Universities which I saw when I was browsing the new edition of the good schools guide in Borders the other day

I'm sure there are also websites - there is a top 100

alternatively send an email to expat with the name and she'll say "its a crock of shit - although the head of chinese studies is an excellent fuck"
or alternatively "its a really good school with a great reputation - although the head of chinese was the worst fucking lay I had in my life"

US News & World Report does a ranking of them every year that's pretty much the gold standard over there.

expatinscotland · 01/05/2007 14:21

Snap, Mimie!

Some are, of course, better known than others, particularly with regard to specialties.

PrincessPeaHead · 01/05/2007 14:22

are you ignoring me expat? [sweet smile emoticon]

I never had the chance to shag anyone in the Chinese department, though.

Now the English, French, German, Philosopy and Engineering departments are a different matter entirely.

I even had a pretty long affair with a department head once .

Good one to work for, and good one to go to can be totally different things. For instance, if you're a professor just starting out, Harvard can be a pretty lousy place to work. Actually, a lot of the students hate it too, but they suck it up to get the "stamp" on their posteriors at the end.

Is there a private message function on this? You can send me one, if so, and I'll let you know what I've heard of it (I've done quite a tour of US universities myself (I'm american) but haven't slept with many professors as I prefer younger men

USAUKMum · 01/05/2007 14:47

I was about to add you could post here -- there are enough US expats someone is bound to know something about the school. I know my alma mater has an extensive program in London........but I'm not as expert as expat is

expatinscotland · 01/05/2007 14:48

I did my year abroad in France.

You could go to East Anglia if you wanted to go to the UK through my university.

But I didn't want to go to the UK .

It's Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's not top ranking but gets a mention for some things in the US News thing, and also in Princeton's top couple of hundred or so. that's good enough for me. never taught before so would like students who are clever enough to get it, but not clever enough to catch me out
