Does anyone know roughly what this would be monthly after tax, NI and student loan deductions? I'm not paying into a pension (as yet).

Don't know what your student loan deduction would be, but a rough rule of thumb for salary less tax and NI is £50 for every £1000 of salary. This would mean 17 x 50 = £800 take home each month, minus your student loan amount. It's only rough but it gets you in the right ball park.

Hmm, I think it would be more than that. I'm sure that 6 million years ago when I started working life on £15,500ish I was bringing home about £900.

I think somewhere between £900 and £1000.

But how much student loan are you paying? Do you have to pay it back when you earn £17K?

It's 9% of net earnings over £15k (unless they have changed it again) so it won't be a huge amount at first.

There's a website that you can enter your gross salary and it hows what's left after tax and Ni.
search tax calculation on google . looks like 17k gives you £1115 per month.
