Can anyone help me? I am considering changing career (I am currently a chartered accountant) and thinking about teaching. Does anyone know how to go about this - what training is required, how much time this would involve/costs involved, contacting schools for job opportunities, etc.

MGF, Look up the teacher trainging agency www.TTA.gov.uk. A PGCE takes 1-2yrs depending on qualifications, fees should be paid and you may get a bursary. if I were you I'd try a few days in a school before you applied.
No matter how much I moan I cannot think of a job I'd rather do.

Hi MGF, I am just changing careers too. I am starting a year long part-time training programme for post-grads with the Montessori Centre International after which I will be qualified to be a Montessori teacher.
I bought a book called working with children and went through a number of different options before deciding on Montessori.
I also used a book called The Pathfinder. This is a bit American but it is a good way of finding out what you really want to do.
Good luck

Kate71, what about being a classroom assistant to get a feel for school life, I have thought about it, very vaguely and wondered what quals you need to be one?
