Probation period extension due to new role

Hi all, I’m hoping someone can help. I have changed a few details to make this less identifying.

I started a job back in October. So my probation period should have ended in January. This never happened. I was promoted and started a different role a few days before the end of the probation period.

I did not sign a new contract, just an amendment to contract form which stated other than job & pay change the rest of my contract remains unchanged. I have now been told that the 3 month probationary period started again when I started the new role?

This seems a bit unfair and incorrect to me? It’s another 3 months of uncertainty & although no concerns have been raised about my performance, this makes me feel uncomfortable, though I appreciate it’s a different role.

Previously in the same company at a different time I also had a promotion & whilst I had a catch-up at the end of what would have been my ‘probationary period’ this was just to catch up with me it was never possible that I could’ve lost my job at that point.

Any light anyone could shed on this would be gratefully appreciated! Thanks in advance Grin

Sorry when I say this never happened I mean at the end of the probation period everyone has a review meeting and you are told if you have passed or failed your probation period! This is what never happened

You were promoted within three months?! They obviously think reasonably highly of you. It’s not unreasonable to want to assess your performance in the role you are now in before making a decision, and they’re allowed to extend probation if they want to.

Don’t worry- probation is meaningless in law anyway- you don’t have any more job security the day after passing probation than you do the day before. Until you’ve got two years’ service your employer can easily dismiss you if they want to anyway.

Perform well in your new role, then in three months your probation will no doubt be confirmed.

Thanks flowery! I have worked in the same company previously which helps I guess but I think I feel just a bit put out because nobody has mentioned it and I still feel like it would’ve been helpful for me to know how I’ve been getting on it that makes sense! Whereas when I asked the other day they said there’s no need to have a catch up for another 3 months which I guess does show their faith in me but also I would appreciate the feedback!

Thanks for your reply! That’s true as well only another 1 year & 9 months to go lol!

Thanks again Smile

I was about to write a reply to you but flowery has already said the exact same thing.

Until you have been employed by a company for two years, there is always uncertaintyso don't worry about this "probation period"
