Pension included in salary?

I'm trying to negotiate a pay rise with my employer. I've had a promotion but no increase in pay. My base salary is say £30,000, I want £32,000. There is a standard company pension which they pay the bare minimum into. So my employer says my actual salary is already £32,000 including my pension, so he doesn't need to pay me any more. My view is the pension is a legal requirement and shouldn't be considered. It's my base rate salary which is the issue. AIBU? I do get bonuses and dividends but these are performance related not guaranteed year on year so again I don't think these should be considered either.

Neither of you is unreasonable. It’s a negotiation. You want a total package of £34k including pension. He wants to pay you a total package of £32k including pension.

Things to focus on include market rate for the job, how your pay compares to others at the same level in your organisation, and the fact that if £30k plus pension was an appropriate salary for your lower role, it isn’t appropriate for the new one.

You need to talk like for like regarding your pay increase. Salary should be split out on your payslip to show your base pensionable salary and a separate line for pension contribution. Your boss is using obfuscation to cloud the issue, so dont let him get away with his "smoke and mirrors". Talk about base salary only and ask him to do the same.

Fine way to reward you (not) for obvious work well done (promotion) by not uplifting your pay to reflect increased responsibility.

If you feel bold....draw to his attention that a man wouldn't accept this treatment.
