Perhaps they would either have to pay you more (or pay a man who is permanently employed more to equal your pay) if you were permanent. Having you on a fixed term contract may allow them to opt out of this.

Well, if the job is only going to last for some 8 weeks I have a hard time seing what grounds there are to treat it as permanent. Do you expect it to be extended in June? Mind if I ask what the line of work is?

If it's single status I assume it's in local government. I would join the union and ask them what's going on. If you've just started you've joined as soon as you can, they might not be able to take a tribunal case but it seems to me it's in the interests of your branch to follow this up if your employer is trying to wriggle around fair treatment of new, or existing, workers.

Single status means same terms and conditions for all levels - so if they provide perks such as a car park/healthcare/canteen it should be equal access for all regardless of mgmt level.

It could well be that the single status rule applys only if you are a permament employee and so to get round offering all staff the same perks they have made some jobs short term contracts (even though they will always be renewed.) This way they do not have to give everyone the costly perks but have not had to scrap single status which would be unpopular.

Best check with your union rep or ask your new line manager.
