Just read on TES website (really must stay off there) that too many teachers are being trained and there aren't enough jobs. Tell me it isn't true? Please.

Are you training for primary or secondary? It all depends what area you are in and what you are training to teach in. In primary in particularly there are some areas with lots of teachers looking for jobs but this does not mean that you are in those area and even if you are it does not mean you won't get a job. It often means you have to be a little more flexible.

spudmasher · 27/04/2007 14:49

It certainly does depend on where you are- we are crying out for good primary school teachers in SE london!

NKF · 27/04/2007 22:00

I'm training for secondary in (supposedly) a shortage subject in London. But I'm not young and I have heard that schools prefer youthful NQTs. Oh well, I guess I have to just live in hope.

Many schools prefer the 'older' NQTs because they bring experience of the subject in the 'real world' and a greater maturity so I'm sure you will be fine

olivo · 29/04/2007 10:26

what is your subject NKF? i know lots of places who need staff and prefer the more mature NQTs - i would say of you're in shortage subject, you'll be fine, particualrly if you're prepared to move for a job. in my experience, people who cant/wont move or travel to work sometimes struggle to find jobs but i'm sure you'll be fine.
good luck.

kiskidee · 29/04/2007 10:36

'ignore' the youthful in front of 'NQT' shouldn't be side by side. what schools want is cheaper teachers hence why an NQT may get the job. your age is an advantage as you bring other life skills with you.

NKF · 29/04/2007 20:35

I can't be flexible regarding moving. My subject is English and I have plenty of life skills (hah!). I hope I'll be fine too.

More of a problem in Primary than secondary

NKF · 29/04/2007 20:43

The age thing?
Sorry, I seem to be torturing myself over a problem that hasn't actually happened yet.

no, sorry, the lack of places for teachers.

I think it is always worse to find jobs in Primary than secondary. When my mate qualified in the 80's it was a case of 'dead (wo)mans shoes'

Blandmum · 29/04/2007 20:46

I went into teaching as a mature student and had no problems getting a job.. Neither did the people who trained with me, who were also mature students with the OU

Thanks Martianbishop. I don't know why but I get these wobbles every so often.
