Notice period

I'm giving in my notice my sick note ends today so I'm back tomorrow. It's taken me all this time to decide what the best thing to do was and I've finally decided. I've got just over a weeks holiday left, can I take than in my notice period and only give a week? Been there about 18 months.
I want to go back for the shortest time possible.
I was off due to work stress and just can't cope with it all anymore.
Thanks Smile

Hi Pineapple, In my experience yes you can! Although you could also save it and work safe in the knowledge you are going to leave and have your holiday days paid in a lump sum?

MorningstarMoon · 19/01/2018 12:00

Depends what your employer says.

But yes it can be done.

spugzbunny · 19/01/2018 12:07

It really depends on your employer. My contract states I can't, but in reality they usually agree.

pineapplesocks · 19/01/2018 18:26

So can I just give a weeks notice regardless? I've had enough of it all and I have another job so I don't need a reference etc

Is your notice period a week?

flowery · 19/01/2018 19:26

Whether you can leave with a week’s notice depends on your contract.

Whether your employer will allow you to take accrued holiday during your notice period is up to them. I’d say that’s more likely to be agreed if you have a long notice period than if you have a very short one but it will depend on the role and how disruptive it would be for them if you disappear extremely quickly.

How long has your sickness period been? Are they expecting you back?

pineapplesocks · 19/01/2018 19:32

I've been off for 5 weeks. I'm not sure what the notice period is Blush I don't work in a profession or anything and I won't be leaving anyone in the lurch etc.

If your paid weekly then 1 weeks notice is what’s usual and a month’s notice if your monthly paid.

Don’t tell them you have a new job.

Have you been signed fit for work because you want to start your new job?

Are you going into work tomorrow? Saturday?

I would ring and advise that I didn’t feel well enough to return to work - ask to take your holidays until you can get a drs appointment next week. Then write a letter Monday giving a week’s notice.

I had two jobs when I went off sick. I spoke to the doctor about it as it was all to do with one work stress so I was signed off from one but not the other. The job I was signed off from know this as I've always been honest with them and they know it was work related.
I'm not better off with my other job, it's less pay, less hours etc but I'm happy.
Going back to the other one fills me with dread I was getting so dizzy I was constantly feeling like I was going to pass out.
I should of handed my notice in when I gave in my last sick note but I was kidding myself that a little extra time and I could manage it again.
I can't and now I'm back tomorrow and I just want to draw a line under it and move on
Essentially resign and that be that Sad

You will find your notice period in your contract.

Yettilegs11 · 19/01/2018 21:56

It's not worth the stress.

Go in tomorrow speak to your boss and tell them you find it stressful. You may have more than one week''s holiday which they will pay you for. As your boss what your options are as you wish to resign.

I am guessing someone has been covering your job or they got a temp in. Maybe that person will want to stay.

Good luck I am sure it will be easier than you think

Allaboutthatcake · 19/01/2018 21:58

They have to pay you or give you the statutory minimum holidays - you can check this out on gov calculator to see what you have accrued.

pineapplesocks · 20/01/2018 17:54

Found out 2 people walked out of there because of the way they were treated after I went off sick. So I took my notice in with immediate effect and walked out of there with a weight off my shoulders! Off to celebrate, with a few drinks with friends and the others that quit, tonight with a big smile on my face.
It's over! Grin
