Term Time Contracts

Has anyone got one and how did approach your company?

In theory my company offers them but as far as I know no-one is on one and I therefore assume my application wouldn't be treated in a favourable light.

I know they can refuse on business grounds but what are valid reasons? Would just the extra cost of employing someone to cover the time I am off be valid? What about the fact that school holidays are generally oversubscribed for people of my job description applying for holiday in the normal way as they normally ration how many people are off each week?

Would while I am on maternity leave be a good time to apply?

Not really applicable I'm afraid being a professional rather than a manager.
My job could be covered by a locum while I am away in school holidays but this may incure higher costs for my employer.Could they therefore refuse my request and if so why offer term time contracts in the first place. Is it just a PR exercise?

Hi FC.
I have just started a term time contract. I was very lucky as I knew of another employee with one who was leaving and asked for her job. However since then one or two others have been given out. I work in the NHS and they are cutting back on staff to save money atm so that might be behind it. I should go ahead and ask. Do you have a child about to start school soon?

it has to be refused for "reasonable" reasons -= see dti website for help.

depends on how much they need you back to be honest, would they be mroe flexible in order to keep you? Yes, they may incur morecosts to
backfill but they would incur considerable cost if you didn't return or you did but then left so had to be replaced. Can youcheck your IWL info locally? Check with HR/childcare co-ordinator?

oh sorry, FC. Not sure if you're in NHS anyway (IWL ref) so not sure if what I said applies so much.
