Hey mumsnet,
long time lurker but first time posting! I'm hoping to get some help regarding a civil service job application, specifically with the 'seeing the bigger picture' competency. This may be a long read, apologies.
The application doesn't ask for 'an example of a time when..' but instead asks:
'think of an issue which is really important to 'the department' and if you had 5 minutes to brief the minister what would you say'
I'm not sure that I've taken the right approach, I have:
- Outlined the context/environment (ie the wider issues, the government pledges and the departmental commitments in the area I have selected)
- Outlined the actions/policies created by the department in respect of the above
- Outlined the internal and external risks (ie things that may prevent the department from achieving the outcomes) and recommendations for mitigation
- Outlined the impact of not dealing with the risks
- Outlined the future developments that may impact this area of work
I've opened and closed with the usual pleasantries
It's a G7 post and as this is not the usual approach taken where they ask for personal experience I'm not sure if I've missed the mark with the above approach.
My main focus was showing that I had an awareness of the wider issues and how the department's work is aligned to dealing with these, things that may impact completion and what can be done to address these along with things we should be preparing for in the future.
Any help would be very much appreciated
