Hi everyone,
I have a band 6 children's nurse interview coming up and a 10 minuted presentation coming up. Asking for an aspect pertinent to the band 6 role and the challenges that come with these.
Do you think this would be stuff like leadership, teamwork, clinical governance or are they to broad?

Also any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated as this is my first band 6 interview.

Thank you in advance

Hard to say without seeing the job description and person specification but leadership is a big topic in my trust at the moment. You could compare the B5 and B6 JDs and choose something that appears in the 6 only. E.g. If the potential new role will involve line management or more formal supervision of junior staff I would present on that to show you understand the new responsibilities and expectations of being a higher band. Good luck!

I would say in most areas leadership/ managerial skills are the biggest difference between the b5 and 6 roles. Also being a step between the band 5s and senior management both in the day to day running of where you work but also in regards to PDRs/ managing staff/ sickness reviews/ ensuring training needs are met for b5s.

I interview A LOT (matron). At new band 6 I would like to see that you have thought about the practical application of leadership/management techniques and have also identified areas you may need support with as they will be new to you. So in my trust I would be pleased if you knew about the different leadership programmes we have running at present and why training is useful not just “I want leadership training” IYSWIM? If your presentation showed me you had researched whatever topic you choose via it’s content I’d be very impressed as again many people come in and reel off something they say they’ve read but cannot summarise what they actually learned from reading it and how it is relevant to the role I’m recruiting for.

Articles will help only sofar as they give pointers as to what you can personally talk about in your interview.

  • what could leadership look like in your Band 6 role, ie can you use the JD they've supplied as part of the recruitment process to pick out any responsibilities and duties where leadership is a key attribute. Those are what you need to focus on with specific examples from your current and past experience, to show situations where you have shown leadership
  • Ask yourself whether you want to lead others. Are you ready for opportunity. Be prepared to give some compelling reasons why you want to step up to the next level.

Are you ready for that opportunity.

On the job description it asks about the CNO 10 key roles. This is what I have found www.nursingleadership.org.uk/publications/keyroles.pdf is this correct to you think?
