How on earth can I increase my earning potential?

I graduated from university in 2014 and found a job as an admin assistant. Not my dream job, but I took whatever I could find as I needed the money and the experience. The pay is poor (I'm on £17000 3 years on), the work is very stressful and the hours are long, so I'm looking for another job, preferably something that pays more. The trouble is, I haven't a clue how to move into something that pays better. The other admin jobs in my area pay around the same - not that I particularly want to stay in admin, but I would consider it if the earning potential was there. I very, very rarely see any jobs advertised that offer training in any other sort of role, and I only got a 2.2 in my degree so graduate schemes generally don't want me, though there aren't many in my area, anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to increase my earning potential? I feel a bit stuck as the opportunities don't seem to be there, unless I'm looking in the wrong places.

^Our company doesn’t take our graduates with a 2.2

Isn't the met office in Exeter? Maybe it's moved.
Places for maths graduates there I would have thought.
Perhaps need another degree or masters.
Accountancy?

Ministry of Defence has quite a few jobs in Bristol and a handful at HMS Devonport - many of the jobs at HMS Devonport are only viewable to internals though. DE&S in Bristol (branch of MoD) is always advertising but pay for new joiners is different to internal staff. I personally don’t think it’s the best place to work but some people must like it and they do pay for training courses and you can work your way up...

For something different how about uk.firstgroupcareers.com/vacancy/great-western-railway-gwr-conductor-6443-exeter-st-davids/6471/description/

Or Flybe is recruiting cabin crew at Exeter airport?

If your firm doesn't have hr, you could ask them to fund some hr training.

The Rural Payments Agency has a job in Exeter. To be honest I think you should be looking to come in at EO / HEO / graduate entry level, but if you came in as an AO, you could apply for promotion quickly.

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions, everyone! I've got a few ideas thanks to your help.

StealthPolarBear There's nothing there that fits my skills/experience at the moment, but I've bookmarked the page as it looks interesting, so hopefully something appropriate for me will appear at some point and I can apply - thanks for your help!

Great :) new jobs do appear all the time and it's great for using maths or stats

What about banking? You may need to go in fairly low level but there’s scope for career development.

What interests you?

Masters in nursing?

toomanycreambuns · 29/12/2017 19:09

I would choose something where you can carve out a career/go up the ladder/get promoted/earn more.

If you are unhappy and stressed in admin then don't go the PA route. PAs are a dying breed and you will probably be more stressed. It's quite easy to get into PA work but very difficult to get out. Trust me, I know!!!

Someone mentioned accountancy I would second this or sales account mangers type role.

A 2:2 won't get the op a place on a pgce

You're wrong:
