I realise most of you don't know me, but a little help on asking for change of office required. Life changing dilema

DH and i and our children want to move to an area where the houses are cheaper. I ork for an organisation that has a subsiduary office close by. I feel that if i just say "Please can i move to the subsiduary office as we would like to actually buy our own house, an opportunity we will not be likley to afford otherwise" is not likley to work.

I feel that maybe if it was a family crisis, that my employers would look more favourably. I have to ask today as i want to make an appointment to view some houses on saturday.

what are your thoughts on this dilema?

I would be honest. If you make up a bogus crisis you will be putting yourself under pressure to maintain the lie, and if you are caught out you will regret it in a big way.

I don't see what's wrong with asking to move to another office for those reasons...if they aren't sympathetic then maybe they would like to offer you a pay rise?!

I really wouldn't invent a crisis but draw up a proposal of how your firm would benefit from your relocating. Would it? What would it enable you to offer the firm? What would it lose by your move - anything? Is there anything that marks you out for the privilege (that isn't supposed to be hostile but as in why you and not loads of other staff) - ie, do you have any particular skills they value. It's a great incentive for them to offer you this so talk that up and also bring in any benefits to them. I think ....

Be honest. Put together a business plan listing the advantages and benefits for both your company and you e.g they won't be losing your valuable skills etc, I think you need to be clear that you will probably end up leaving if you aren't transferred.

Not sure what the dilemma is. When you know you're about to move (may take a while) can't you just ask if you can relocate because it would suit your personal circumstances. They may say no of course but they may say yes. Or are you talking about miles away so you couldn't possibly commute? In which case, you need to be sure you want to move and be prepared to leave your company for another job if you aren't relocated.

I agree with the others - I wouldn't invent a crisis.

Thank you. I have nothing special or outstanding that they canot replace, it may be inconvenient and take some training, TBH maybe a new person would be put off with erratic hours and a high amount of travelling, therefore the recruitment could be tiresome for the company. The team manager is not afraid to restructure and could decide that one person less is something that the team could manage.

The thing in my favour is that i know for certain my manager has has a newly created post making him 'super manager' or something with a better title. Which means that his post will be available to apply for. This would make an additional manager redundant as if my post was itself made redundant, that would mean as a team we would have two managers and two members of staff!

I think that maybe my manager may think this through and think "poo, we can't have that and maybe my own post will be negated" It is definatley not commutable.

As it is a subsiduary of the company and not the company itself, i would be working out of my operational area. This would go against me, although we have an excellent work life balance benefits package and maybe this would be considered?

Thank you for all your advice, i guess i should bite the bullett and hope my Manager feels wonderful this Monday morning!

Bullet has been bitten. no lies were told. he said he would have to check with director but without hesitation said he had no objections so long as there is room at said office.

cool
