Can I wear my uniform to a job interview?

I have an interview coming up, it’s right in the middle of the day and too late notice for me to book the entire day off work. I’m going to have to leave work and go straight to my interview.

Would it be terrible for me to attend in my nurses uniform? It is for another nursing job but I wouldn’t be required to wear inform for the job I’m being interviewed for if that makes any difference.

I’m torn because I either go in uniform or don’t go at all. Or potentially change in supermarket toilets and risk not looking my best!

No, you need to change.
Even if it is in a supermarket toilet you do need to change

Smarshian · 08/12/2017 10:59

I would probably change too.

Summer1986 · 08/12/2017 11:03

As a nurse myself I would also change unless the interview was at the same hospital.

OydNeverDeclinesGin · 08/12/2017 11:06

Of course you need to change. From a hygiene/cross contamination point of view it would look rather unprofessional unless you're interviewing in the same dept.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 08/12/2017 11:08

If you want the job, change. Why can’t you change at your place of work?

Greenteandchives · 08/12/2017 11:12

I think you have to change. It really isn't good practice for nurses to wear their uniforms out of their place of work.

titchy · 08/12/2017 11:21

Depends if you want the job or not. If you do, change.

Shakey15000 · 08/12/2017 22:49

I'd change in the supermarket toilet as well.

Migraleve · 08/12/2017 22:54

Why on earth can't you change at work before you leave?

BlessYourCottonSocks · 08/12/2017 23:00

I didn't think nurses were supposed to wear uniform out of work? For hygiene/cross contamination reasons. Our hospital used to make staff arrive and leave in ordinary clothes.

BakedBeans47 · 09/12/2017 02:00

Sorry no, that’s utterly grim. You need to change.

SD1978 · 09/12/2017 03:13

Agree with others. It’s an infection control issue firstly, and most hospitals have a policy that you are not aupposed to wear uniforms out if he premises, especially if they have an in house laundry. You need to take some other clothes, and change within the hospital you work In preferably

Longdistance · 09/12/2017 03:29

Get changed. It’s a terrible faux pas to go in uniform to an interview. I used to interview people in my previous job, and a lady didn’t get the job as she was wearing uniform. I’d rather she changed into something else. She didn’t even take the name badge off.

nooka · 09/12/2017 03:35

The OP might be a community or practice nurse and not work at a hospital so no real infection control issue. Generally it would be very poor form to go to an interview wearing your current employers uniform, but that's not really an issue within the NHS. However I'd change if you can OP, some people have very strong views about what is acceptable to wear at interview. I worked with a nurse once who wanted to reject a candidate because her shoes weren't shiny enough!

Bring a soft dress (doesn't wrinkle) in a sports bag. Nobody will think about you bringing a sports bag to the interview, with your uniform inside the bag. Leave the bag with the receptionist where you in all likelihood will leave your coat too.

Why doesn't your workplace have a changing room? Where do people change into their scrubs?

blueberrymojito · 09/12/2017 20:33

Thanks for the replies. Everyone has assumed I work in a hospital but I actually work in the community.

I don’t wear scrubs and my uniform is smart but I do agree it would be best to change before. Getting changed at work isn’t an option obviously, but I will change in some supermarket toilets beforehand. I wouldn’t have felt comfortable going in uniform but I thought I’d ask the question.

I work at a dentist and we have to get changed into our scrubs in the staff room, as we don't have changing rooms
