would you take a job which meant a pay cut?

I'm fed up in my current job and want to change. Had an interview today which went well.... until the guy realised how much money I was on. He was rather embarassed to admit he couldn't offer anything like it! Shame as the job sounded good - am a bit annoyed with the agent as he didn't tell me beforehand. Have you guys taken a pay cut for another job?
There wouldn't be any prospect of a rise in the near future, either, and the job is further away - but it did sound interesting. I've probably put them off anyway now!

I have but I'm a Nanny so I probably don't count!

I did, but left a businessy job to work in the charity sector - loved the job and was glad I did it, but had to get used to a different budget - SAHM now, so it helped me get used to poverty

Being a bit cheeky there - dh has a perfectly good income and we don't struggle too much without my charity job offerings.

yes we could afford it atm... will have to think.

I took volutary redundacy from a well paid job to becoame a teaching assistant on a very poor wage. The job makes up for the pay, as does the hours & of course - the school hols!

I took a pay cut of about £15k a few years ago. I was in a very senior position at one firm, had a baby, got treated like sh*t during maternity leave and after returning (with pnd) and eventually had a breakdown at work and went off sick that day and never went back. During the 5 months I was off, my boss (personnel director!!!), or anyone else in the Company for that matter, didn't even have the balls to get in touch with me personally. I ended up in negotiations with a consultant they hired and got a compromise agreement.

I then started at another firm in a less senior position on a lot less money and it was fine. I had less responsibilty and stress and it helped me gain my confidence. I've gone on to have 2 more children and though my current boss is pathetic its been so worth it.

I now feel ready to move back up the ladder again but will probably find it difficult as I only want to work 3 days per week.

To make a short story long, I guess what I am trying to say is that money isn't everything

thanks all for replies. I quite fancied the job even though it was less pay and further away - although tbh it did sound like they were trying to get away with paying less for quite a senior job! I don't think I got it though as they know how much I get paid now and were quite embarassed that they couldn't come near it...

i took a huge paycut to give up my city job and start my own business, but its what i wanted to do and luckily we could afford for me to.

if you are not happy, and you are looknig, and liked the sound of the job, then see how much you could afford to 'lose' in pay.
