Can I clock up airmiles if work have booked and paid for my flight?

Just that really. I’m starting a new job in 2018 which involves both long and short haul travel approximately 8 times a year. New employer has booked me onto my first trip and today sent details of flights and accommodation, does anyone know if I can benefit from the thousands of miles I’ll be flying over the next year? Or are airmiles only able to be clocked up when you book and pay for yourself? Will post in Longhaul thread also.

Thank-you.

DH does, but he has a company credit card and books all travel on that himself so gets all the hotel and airline points.

It’s normally enough for us to have a weekend away each year

Crumbs1 · 22/11/2017 15:26

We do. We have hotel loyalty card too.

HotelEuphoria · 22/11/2017 15:30

It depends how they are booked moving forwards. DH collects air miles and hotel miles but like a previous poster he books all his own travel on his credit card and claims it back through Business Expenses so any loyalty programmes are all in his name.

Depends on the company - we book all our travel through the work system, but you can upload and save all your scheme numbers and collect the points. Any uncollected points go into a company pot and get used for manual bookings by the travel agents I believe.

TeaBelle · 22/11/2017 15:35

Yes you can - although you can't always use upgrade vouchers if you aren't paying for the fight. Dh has a Lloyds avios credit card for all company spending to maximise the avoid that he earns ie hotel bills which he claimsback. He also always asks to stay in a particular brand of hotel which offers a loyalty scheme

I think some employers will keep them for the company. They can cash them in to save money for the company.

At least, I think that was the case some years ago.

SandLand · 22/11/2017 15:49

We could. Booking was centralised, but we could log all our airline/hotel/hire car loyalty cards, and the points were ours to do with what we will.

Yes you can collect Airmiles for any flight booked in your name as I understand it.

poisonedbypen · 22/11/2017 16:10

Yes, my membership numbers for all sorts of loyalty cards are on the work system, so I get them automatically. Years ago I heard that you should declare them as a benefit, but I'm not sure about that.

Polarbearflavour · 22/11/2017 16:41

As long as you aren’t in the public sector!

CMOTDibbler · 22/11/2017 16:48

Some companies don't let you - a friend worked for one that kept them all and then raffled off flights.
My company does let us, we just have to enter our loyalty numbers in the travel booking system and then they are automatically applied.

user1477249785 · 23/11/2017 20:29

It depends whether you are asking whether the airline will let you accrue miles, or whether your work will. The airline doesn't care who paid for the ticket: if your name in on it, you can clock up the miles on your account. But as for your work, it will depend upon what their policy is and no one here can tell you that. I am absolutely not allowed to earn miles when work pays. They consider it unethical and it would result in a disciplinary. I have friends for whom this is a major perk. So you will need to ask what your own terms and conditions are and go from there.

Evewasinnocent · 23/11/2017 21:13

I can now I work in the private sector - as @polarbear says I couldn’t when I worked in the public sector.

Shopgirl1 · 23/11/2017 21:29

I do, just add my frequent flyer number to bookings .

Shopgirl1 · 23/11/2017 21:29

Our Travel Policy details that we can do it.

Parker231 · 23/11/2017 21:32

Yes - I have all the airline loyalty schemes in my name. Frequent flights for work mean that our long haul holiday flights are sorted!

Chewbecca · 24/11/2017 11:52

Yes, we can, my executive club number is recorded in the company's travel booking system.

My family have had a long haul summer holiday in business class as a result which was fantastic.
