Job offer and giving in notice

Been offered new job, there's been a bit of to and fro-ing about salary but now that's sorted and HR are taking up references. My new manager is keen for me to start asap and has asked me to give notice now; their HR advice is wait until they notify all checks clear. I've been caught out in the past by recruitment taking longer than expected and being left weeks without pay - can't afford to risk it esp before Christmas? aibu to insist on waiting? Don't want to start on the wrong foot. I did offer to go in informally but told because of sickness and leave there'd be no one with time to show me the ropes - feeling a bit worried about even taking this job to be honest; manager has tried to browbeat me (politely) about money, now about start date - what will it be like when actually work there? but I do need a new job as current one is likely to end in spring

Don't jeopardise your current employment, only hand in your resignation when you have received a firm written offer of employment unconditionally.

It's like any relationship, if the warning signs of someone pressurising you against your will are evident so early on, take heed. They should be falling over themselves to entice you to join their company. If they aren't on their best behaviour now, you'd be better holding out until you feel an employer really wants you and is prepared to wait, not pressure you to put your current employment at risk.

If your current role is still available until Spring, you do have quite a bit of time yet ...
