Regrade query

Hello, I would appreciate any advice over a regrade that is due to happen.

Management have agreed that our team should be in a band higher than we are. There are various pay points within the bands. Some new colleagues are at the bottom, im in the middle and others are at the very top. The boss has said when we move to the higher grade, we won't move to the equivalent point, we will all start at the bottom.

Some of my colleagues are therefore unhappy that after doing the job for years they will be on the same pay point as the new starters.

Is this fair? Thank you.

I don't know the legal position, but I would certainly feel annoyed at being on the same rate as people I have more experience than. I can understand not putting you all at the same points as you are now, but I would still expect there to be some differentiation.

I assume no one's salary is going down? Our paybands have some overlap, so someone right at the top of a lower band could be on more than someone at the very bottom of the next.

But as I say, that doesn't mean they can't do it - I don't know.

Thank you.

No ones pay is going down. Those already at the top of the scale will see an increase of about £300 if they start at the bottom of the next scale whereas those currently at the bottom will see an increase of about £3000.

So great news for some and hardly any difference for others.

There will always be winners and losers in these grading initiatives.

"New starters" doesn't necessarily mean they lack experience. If someone is recruited into the organisation with an impressive CV with blue-chip experience, post-grad etc, they will be a priority to retain so could find themselves going up the corporate food-chain a lot quicker than someone who has been in the company for years.

Companies will always be generous to those they want to keep. Unfortunately it's a bit like insurance, loyalty doesn't pay.

If everyone is doing the same job then everyone should have the same pay when starting from scratch. It's like you're all getting a promotion.
