When do you hand in your notice

I have been offered and accepted a new job. The contract has arrived today. Subject to references etc just the usual stuff. Company is a reasonable size and well respected and I have received lots of information from them about ordering broadband for me at home and the plan for my first week etc so all reassuring. I'd like to hand in my notice as soon as possible. Is there anything I should do before I quit. It's a long time since I've changed jobs. Thanks

Have you agreed a start date with your new company? If they want you to start on a Monday / 1st of the month make sure your end date with your old company lines up with this unless you can afford or would like a break between jobs. Check how much leave you have left and calculate how much you are entitled to, so annual amount divided by 12 to get monthly amount. You should be able to take this at the end of your notice period.

When are you starting the new job?
What is the notice period?

Take the first date, and count backwards the notice period and hand your notice in the day before so that it starts on the next actual working day.

Eg if you start on November 1st and your notice period is 1 calender month, hand your notice in on the last but one working day in September. If it is 4 weeks though, you could hand your notice in on the 2nd of October and your last working day would be October 31st.

Also depending on when you start and how well organized your new company is, you may not get paid the first month. So if you start on the 15th of October, you may not get paid until 31 November (for both October and November) but will only have had 2 weeks pay from your old place in October. So try and be a bit frugal this month if you can.

Thanks everyone. I am doing the deed today. It's probably me just being a bit nervous. Curious as to how my boss is going to take it.

How did you get on handing in your notice?

It was ok thank you. I'm leaving to a home based role and think the partner could see that it was a good move for me. He's known me for over seven years so knows me well enough to see that I'm not trying to manipulate to get more money. He admitted he hasn't been supportive and apilogised. Think they are a bit gutted but he's a decent guy and won't put any of that burden back on to me. Feel slightly guilty as we've only just restructured our teams and they'll have to do it all again now! Really excited about the new job. The two months notice us really going to drag!
