Possible new job... worse company benefits

I've recently been offered a marketing job in an industry I'm really interested in. I've already verbally accepted, but having received my contract yesterday, doubts started creeping in.

The main issue if my current job is the industry - not very exciting (for me at least) and a bit behind the times when it comes to marketing. The company is very much stuck in their ways and against change, which I really struggle with. On the other hand, it's very flexible (compressed hours if wanted, working from home when need to), offers good holiday, an excellent pension plan, 6 months sick pay, 35h working week.

The new job is in an industry I am very excited about, but the company benefits aren't that great compared to my current company: same number of holiday days BUT only 8 weeks sick pay in a year, pension plan average, 37,5h working week (I know it's only an additional 2,5h a week, but just writing it all out as it is). I've already been made aware that it's going to be very demanding. They also don't seem as flexible as my current company.

i'm a bit stuck and not sure where to go from here. Do I go work with the new company which seems to offer better opportunities but worse company benefits.

Or do I stay with what I know: perhaps not the most exciting of industries but for a company that really looks after me?

I don't want to be one of those people who get comfortable with where they are and what they do and stop challenging themselves, but it's hard not to!

Where are you in your career and what is important to you? Do you want progression? Do you have a life outside work and want work/life balance?

Industries can be very different. 35 hours, flexibility, good benefits and a bit set in their ways sounds like engineering/manufacturing to me. The other job sounds much more commercial so IT, telecoms, retail? There are lots of people working well in excess of their 37.5 hour week and taking short lunch breaks. Working harder and for less benefits/flexibility certainly isn't unusual.

If you hear warning bells then heed them. When I was younger I pushed through and ignored the signs only to be in a worse off position than I had been.

Most of the marketing jobs I know of fall in your prospective job's category. I also have a job like that, but it's not in marketing - although I work a 60 hour week, I can work from home as I need and plan my schedule so often don't need to use sick leave at all unless I'm so sick I can't wfh.

I'm having a similar issue op. To be honest though your new job sounds like great benefits to me (if you hadn't told me about your current job!). In my area we only get a week sick leave paid though so everyone's benefits sound great in comparison.

I'm looking for another job at the minute because I'm deeply unhappy. I get paid pretty well. Have a flexible boss and good holidays. All the jobs I've seen advertised have less pay, more hours less holidays but because I'm so unhappy I'm applying. Reason? Because job satisfaction is what I'm looking for now and somewhere that I'm not going home every night bloody miserable,

The thing that jumped out for me was the old school approach and resisting of change. I'm in exactly that situation (I'm a Head of) and it's driving me mad. It's frustrating that I can't apply everything/anything I know to be the right/better way of doing things.

I'm at a point where I'm interviewing despite being on phenomenal pay and ironically it's putting stuff on my CV that I know will be better long term.

Keep looking

Apologies - I read the other way round!
Go!

Chainedtothesky · 26/09/2017 15:20

Thank you everyone!

You have really helped steer me in the right direction. I've accepted, starting next month! Wish me luck.

Tanfastic & Buckingambae, best of luck in your job searches, keeping my fingers crossed for you both.
