Job interview follow-up?

I have had a job interview last Tuesday and was advised by the panel that they are looking to make a decision and get in touch with candidates by Friday.

I am yet to hear from them. Normally, I would just assume that I didn't get the job and move on with my life, however one of my friends works for the company already and I know they like to take their time with the recruitment process (it's not unusual for them to go beyond the specified time frame for getting back to candidates).

Knowing the above, I should probably take the 'sit and wait' attitude, however I have other commitments to take into account.

I am about to undertake a Master's degree which starts a week tomorrow. I have told myself that If I get this job, I will push my master's degree back by a year and focus on the new job.
Ideally, I would need to get in touch with the university and make arrangement to push it back by Wednesday this week.

I'm thinking of getting in touch with the hiring manager tomorrow and ask for an update. I'm not sure how to word my request? Should I tell them I have other commitments I need to make a decision on?

“Hi —
I hope you’re having a great week. When attending my interview for the on Tuesday 12/09 I was advised that your team would be finalizing a hiring decision by the end of last week. Having heard from anyone just yet, I’m eager to hear if you have an update?

I'm very excited about the role with , but have been offered another opportunity in the meantime. Working for is still me preferred option, therefore I would like to see the process through before I commit myself to anything else.
I will need to make my final decision by the end of this week, so any update from you would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks"

Does this read ok or perhaps a little desperate?

Would you walk away from the role altogether if you don't hear back by the end of the week then?

It seems unlikely their decision making process is going to go any quicker because of your email.

I would pare it back and ask for an update on when you might hear back. Then based on that, decide what to do next.

Just to say "another opportunity in the meantime" sounds like you've been offered another job, so I would perhaps phrase that as "an opportunity to return to study" or something like that if you do email them. To me, Monday isn't early enough to send this - one of the panel may have been off sick on Friday or they may be waiting on references. I'd wait until Wednesday before sending.

I wouldn't refer to an opportunity to study, because it makes you sound a bit flaky rather than committed. If someone's umming and ahhing between working or studying they aren't a particularly attractive prospect for an employer because it sounds like they don't actually know what they want.

The Master's degree is to be studied via online learning, so it wouldn't affect my job whatsoever :) I am currently in full-time employment as it is and was planning to do my master's alongside it.
However, I do think the new job will be a little more demanding thus studying might be a challenge.

Not an issue anymore as they just rang offering me the job :) Thank you for your messages.

Yes I realise that, from your OP, but if you had responded as pp had suggested, referring to an "opportunity to study" as being the reason you need to know about the job, it would have suggested it was either/or, thereby giving the flaky impression!

Congratulations though, glad it's all irrelevant!

Thank you, flowery! :)
