Think I've been fired?

I work in a private college teaching adults. Work as self employed though work set hours/days. We finished for the term in July to 're start in September. Well, last week my colleague texted me asking if I've started work as our boss texted her to come in. I never received a text! and said I was worried. She told me registration is still going and not to worry. Well ive been trying to contact my boss but she doesn't reply to my messages, answer her phone, is not in the office each time I call. Very unprofessional to act this way. Tbh I can't think of anything that is the cause of her behaviour. I met all my targets, my students did well in exams etc. So what should I do? Leave it and move on? Keep pursuing an explanation? I Have some of my things in the office and ideally I want to get 55hem back so should I call and say I'm going down to collect them?. This is a really crap situation as I thought I had a job come September. If they didn't want me back them they could have told me in July so I could have started looking for jobs.

I'm confused. Didn't you know when you were expected back?

Belindaboom · 17/09/2017 22:49

That's very strange, id def be doing more than texting at this point. If you have then it's a completely unacceptable way to do it.

Go in and see her!

It is worrying- in my area a lot of adult education courses have been cancelled at the last minute due to a lack of funding.
I would email your immediate boss and then email above them- courtesy at least would require her to let you know what is happening. But if you're self employed it may be time to find another contract, this college sounds very unprofessional and unreliable.

What does your contract or engagement letter say? Was it of a temporary nature, so not automatically rolling on from one year to the next and that you'd have to reapply for your job each academic year?

Can you go up to the college and speak to someone there face to face, even if it isn't the manager, at least find out what the situation is and what process needs to be followed.

You say working as self employed - you should therefore have a contract with them which specifies giving notice, and states the basis on which you are providing a service? What does that say?

If you don't have one, I would question whether you are in fact self employed, or if you have employment rights.
