Primary School Nurse

Hi There
Hope I've come to the right page, but is anybody a school Nurse or Welfare Assistant in a primary school? What does a typical day involve? I know main duties would be, caring for a child who is feeling ill or maybe administering medication, tending to a child who has bumped their head or cut themselves. What else?

I want to apply for Welfare Assistant in a primary school. I've worked in schools before but as School Administrator. My husband is in the medical field but I have no medical background. What things are good to put in an application? Thank you so much for any tips!

I'm a school nurse, but have never worked with or heard of Welfare Assistants. I can't imagine it would be a full time job - injuries and illnesses at school aren't that common and tend to be dealt with by teachers, TAs and support staff including first aiders.

Is it more of a Home/School Link Worker role? In my DDs old primary school they had that role, she was a support worker who provided assistance to families that needed support with parenting, behaviour management, additional needs information, stuff like that.

You can't apply for jobs as a school nurse without the pre requisite training-3 years training (or 2 years if you already hold a degree) to gain a nursing qualification (adult/child/LD/mental health) followed by 1 year training to gain an additional entry on the NMC register as a specialist public health nurse-school nurse route

Schools have pastoral/welfare l support workers and I suppose some of these may take on first aid responsibilities in the absence of a school nurse (they don't tend to be on site all the time), however I'd imagine you'd need some prior experience for one of these posts

You could consider looking for a role as an HCA in a school nurse team? However you wouldn't be based in a school all the time-these teams are based out of health centres with a caseload of local schools. Generally they do term time only though

Sorry, I didn't give much info about the job. It's part-time, 3 days a week. I had a little look at the job description which it says the applicant must have First Aid training. I did do a First Course last year, apart from that I only have O-Levels.

Well, if you meet the person spec then go for it! Nothing to lose! 👍🏻

I don't think this is a 'standard' job others can advise you on - you need to look at the job spec, and, if you aren't clear, speak to someone at the school. Perfectly reasonable to make informal enquiries about what the role entails before applying - the school will be glad not to have dozens of formal applications from people who think the job is different from what they want it to be.
