In my own time or work time?

Work are sending me on a 2 part training course. As well as attending the training sessions, I am required to study (I think there might be a test at the end). Should I be studying in my own time or during work time?

That should have been agreed when you signed up to the course. Is it compulsory training?

Hippiechic · 12/09/2017 20:48

If you have not requested this training for your own development then it should be done in work time not your own.

It's not compulsory training. We were asked as a team to let management know of any training we wanted to do as there was funding available for it.

If you've requested it then it's more likely that the study will need to be in your time

I guess it's mutually beneficial...to me personally yes, but it's obviously work related so will give me better skills in the workplace

I would normally expect to do the training in work time and the additional studying in my own time. You'll only make a success of your career if you put effort in personally.

Most companies would expect you to do at least some study in your own time.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 12/09/2017 21:45

Ask if there is a study policy, we have one. It includes paid time off for study and the exam, we pay the course fee whilst you are expected to study in your own time if needed and using the above study leave .

If you don't pass the first time then the paid leave is reduced. And there is also a signed section to agree to pay back 100% of the course fees to us if you leave within 12 months of gaining your qualifications etc so worth checking just incase you have plans to leave and they then take the full amount from your final salary...

I would always expect study in your own tim. Not so much mandatory elearns for compliance though

Yes I think that sounds about right - attending the training in work time and studying in my own time. That's fair.

I recently had a two day course and 10 hours pre-reading which I did in work time! I wouldn't expect to spend my own time studying!
