New job offer, want old payslip.

I've been offered a new job. The HR are insisting I show them my last payslip from my current employer. I have already provided a copy of my P60 to prove my NI number. Are they allowed to demand to see my payslip, I thought it was confidential?
I work on a zero hours contract and the work I have been offered is very sporadic. In fact I haven't worked for them since December.

They don't need a payslip to prove my salary as it is irrelevant. The new role salary is half what I was earning in my current role. Surely they would've asked for confirmation of my salary when asking for a reference.

I'm finding this process very invasive.

I agree. I wouldn't show them my last payslip. None of their business.

They've said it's a condition of employment, but I think the P60 is ample.

Employment pre-checks are increasingly rigorous these days. I changed jobs recently and like you OP, I found the checks very intrusive (my industry is particularly strict because we're regulated). But if you want the job, you need to go along with it. I'm not sure where the harm is in providing your last payslip? Especially given you'll be paid less in the new job. Have you provided them with a P45? If they have your P45, asking to see your payslip as well is a bit OTT but I'm not sure why it bothers you so much?

Depends on the employer's perspective. Some pre-employment checks are more about your honesty i.e. if you're a "fit and proper person" than the actual information provided. By that I mean that if, for example, you exaggerated your last salary during the interview/application process, this will come to light when they see your P45/payslip. The issue is less about the actual salary you earned previously but more that you weren't honest about it. Same goes for reasons for employment gaps, job titles, etc etc

You need a P45 not a P60 so they can enter the year to date fugues on the payroll system.

A P60 is an end of year certificate & without a P45 it implies you are still working for the other company.

I am still technically employed by the other company and I explained this at the interview. I don't have a P45. The role is a bank job so undefined hours.

My problem is that I don't have my last pay slip and I didn't particularly want to contact my current manager.

So far they've had so many documents for a DBS check, perhaps I'm just old school and think that pay slips are private.

They don't need a current payslip for that. In fact they can't do that. Without a P45 A second job is taxed at basic rate. After the new employer submits the first FPS then HMRC may decide to split the code.
