Need to get out of care work

Been in care work & healthcare for 4 years & honestly it's wearing me down & I just don't have the passion for it anymore. I have a NVQ 3 but would really like to just come away from care altogether & even healthcare. Trouble is all I've ever known is taking care of people or children. I don't have experience in anything else. I don't know what I want to do & it's driving me mad & making me miserable. Anyone take a career change? If so, what?

Do you have any other qualifications?

Girlintheframe · 10/08/2017 08:15

I'm in exactly the same position as you Cocnutgal.

I now hate care with a passion but again am at a loss to what else to do. Could you use your svq to move into a more admin based role, or something that could help with teaching care?

KindleBueno · 10/08/2017 15:47

I moved from domiciliary care to support work. I'm an employment Officer for people with disabilities. I absolutely adore my job. Surprisingly similar but not as pressured - and waaaay better money.

Girlintheframe · 10/08/2017 19:51

How did you make that move Kindle?

KindleBueno · 10/08/2017 20:02

I did have a few social care qualifications but really during the interview and application I emphasised how transferable the skills gained in care were. I think most people are unaware how skilled a job it is unless it's explained.

CoconutGal · 11/08/2017 10:03

I'm not sure how transferable my NVQ is. I don't know of anyone who has taken a move out of healthcare & care. I'd love to do an admin role but feel like without any experience in that field no one would employ me.

Transferable skills are a lot less difficult than it appears - organisation skills, time keeping, attention to detail, anticipation of others needs, maintenance of dignity and respect in the workplace, communication skills - especially shows your skills can be adapted to people's needs and levels of understanding, literacy, numeracy, record keeping, keeping to work plans, management of people, knowledge of safeguarding law...... The list goes on. Don't underestimate yourself!

I've seen so many vacancies for admin & ive gone to apply but just second guessed it. I feel more settled having read these comments & I think I can take the plunge. Thank you everyone.

I went from care work, to supervising careers in care work, then to a teaching assistant, then to a special needs teaching assistant, then to an sen officer with the local council.
Every one of my jobs have involved caring for people at their heart.

I too feel the same way ive been doing care work for nearly 9 years now and i too want a different job. Where i work everuthing has changed and not for the better. I would like to work with children or in a school but again i only have my svq3 as my most recent qualification and most jobs ive seen require qualifications i dont have.
