Making the jump up the ladder

Hi all, not sure where to post this. In my last job I took on a lot of responsibility, staff training, project management etc. way above my JD/pay grade. How do I make the jump for my next role to get to the pay and job title of where I was actually working? My old job title has "administrator" in it which seems to pigeonhole me right away and I'm not being considered for those next level project manager/co ordinator/manager type jobs. Are there key phrases to use in a covering letter? Is there a special way to write my CV to make it more clear I can perform well in a higher level role and just need that first official role? Thanks!

Make it clear in your application what you were doing i.e quantify as much as you can. Numbers, figures, responsibilities. e.g. how many people have you trained, or what budget were you responsible for, or what projects did you run and were 'on budget' and 'on time'. Are you on LinkedIn? Check that your profile there showcases your responsibilities and achievements too. Don't be afraid to big yourself up because nobody else can do that for you. If you are on LinkedIn, who can you ask to write a recommendation.

Good luck.
Sherry

Ring before you apply and sell yourself on the phone? I thought this is always a must for any job?

'Hello, my name is ?, I'm ringing to see if ? Job is still available? Ok great, technically my Current job title is administrator, but I actually do ? And ? And ?, so I'd be a perfect fit for this role. Can I have direct email to send my application through to?'

Thanks both. Have got some cracking insights from ex colleagues linked in. I trained him and it was his first "proper" job out of uni but the way he describes his role on linked in he was running the sodding org! Wow! Have been rewriting the cv to cut out excessive details of low level stuff. Focus on the high level project work plus make it clear I had sole responsibility for those areas. Feeling positive!

Yay good luck!! Def ring first though, it could well be the difference when they have a the CVs in front of them and short listing who to ring .
