how to answer tricky salary questions at interviews

Hello All!!!

Just a quick question, I have a few interviews scheduled and some of the jobs have not posted salary. How do you answer the question, how much do you expect to earn? and how much are you earning now? Do I have to answer the how much are you earning now? Any help will be much appreciated.👏🏻

Ask them before you go, otherwise it's a waste of time for both parties.

I went for an interview, was asked what my salary was: the chap interviewing me told me that was more than he earned.

These days I don't bother applying for a job where the salary isn't stated.

Just tell them what salary range you are looking for.

Good luck with your interviews.

Thanks for the reply! It is indeed so much easier when they advertise the salary first hand. The first interview is a phone call so I don't mind, but also this a very big brand so I am very interested.

Sometimes they won't advertise salary first as it will be flexible dependant on experience and qualifications. The best way to respond to expectations is to say that it would have to reflect your workload and responsibilities but also take into consideration any other benefits.

Look at the minimum you would be willing to accept, what you think you should get based on the job spec and add a buffer for negotiation. Just because they say no to an initial request doesn't mean there won't be room for negotiation. If you just tell them the minimum that you want it could be way below what they are expecting to pay so will happily accept.

Don't sell yourself short.

Give a range, based on market research for the sector. Make sure the bottom end is above your minimum. It is part psychology, whatever number you give they will only accept or try to reduce. No company ever said oh you're asking for too little, here's a pay rise!
