How do you travel to work?

I live in semi -rural area and I run my own little cleaning business. However, I'm considering to close it and start work in accounting, which I studied long time ago. There's very big city 30 miles away, I'm thinking to get a job there. It means an hour travel each way. How far do you travel to your work? How long does it take ? How do you deal with it, is it a problem? I've always had my job close and it's a big change for me.

Hour and ten door to door - train. Very normal here - commute into London. Lots do longer.

Changed jobs a few months ago and it takes me 35 minutes now on a tram. Prior to that I had 8 years of a hours drive each way.

I commute 20 miles into a city. It takes about 45 mins to drive and 5 mins to walk from a reasonably priced car park. My job involves a lot of travelling (within about 40 miles) and often need to go out during the day at short notice. It is also very unusual for me to be in the office more than twice a week; when I have a have a site visit/depot meeting half the day, I try and arrange my work in order to work at home the other half.

Sorry, 15 mins to walk from car park. Pretty much an hour door to door at rush hour. Half that in the middle of the day; twice that if people forget how to drive properly on the M1.

45 mins door to door, sometimes up to an hour and 15 depending on traffic or trains. Fairly standard, I would say.

I cycle, takes 30 mins and much faster than car or public transport (inner city).

MidCenturyist · 08/07/2017 22:48

35-60 mins by car depending on traffic (22 miles), I wouldn't want to do anything much further. I also wouldn't want to work too close to where I live as I feel it helps separate work/life iyswim.

By car. Takes me 40 mins on a morning but that includes dropping dd off at school. Its actually only 10 mins on an afternoon when traffic is light and i am going straight home.

I am extremely lucky and most people in my office travel anything from 45 mins-1.5 hours.

I just happened to be offeres a job down the road.

cycle-train-cycle. It's a 17 mile drive but the traffic is horrid.

eurochick · 09/07/2017 08:35

Hour and a quarter each way. Walk train walk.

I hate the time it takes and the train part is pretty miserable. My last house had a 35 minute commute which was much more bearable.

wrinkleseverywhere · 09/07/2017 08:50

30 mile journey which is a 55 min drive in the mornings & 45 in the evenings & only about 30 mins outside the rush hour (mainly motorways).
My previous commute was 1.5hrs by train/tube which was more relaxing but I have re-gained an hour each day by changing jobs.
I only work four days a week with a day off mid-week. In both jobs, in weeks where I work five days, I have found the commute disproportionately exhausting.

urbanrock · 09/07/2017 08:52

I drive. 15 minutes. Although it takes an hour and 15 to drop dcs at school and childcare and then get to work.

Redcliff · 09/07/2017 17:29

I do an hour each way - sometimes a little more if the tube is playing up. I listen to audio books as I have to stand for about half of it.

80sMum · 09/07/2017 17:33

My workplace is 5.5 miles from my home. I usually drive (12 minutes) but sometimes I walk (1hr 45min).

WeAllHaveWings · 09/07/2017 18:27

20 miles from home, we are allowed to pick start times so a lot of people start early 7am, have a short lunch, and leave early 15:45 to avoid peak motorway traffic. This reduces travel time for me from over and hour to 30 mins.

I also car share will 2 colleagues who live local to me and work same hours. I'm not the most social, but the savings in fuel and car miles only driving every 3rd week is worth it. We also get priority parking at work because we share.
