I leave, then dream job becomes available

I've worked in my department a long time. Really good at my job, respected. Desperately bored and wanting a promotion to the next level for a pay raise. Finally one comes up in the department but in a different discipline. I take the plunge, they take a risk and I get the job.

8mths later my dream job comes up in my old department Angry can't help but feel gutted. My husband says it wasn't meant to be.

I like my new role, but don't love it. Then again I would give up work if I could. Should I go for it, or accept that it wasn't meant to be? X

Doesn't sound like you have left at all, or am I misunderstanding? Sounds like an internal vacancy came up doing something different which wasn't your perfect job, and you got it, but now another internal vacancy has come up which is your perfect job.

The only reason not to apply would be that you then give the impression that you are not happy and committed in your current role, but it's not as if you'd be doing it after a month, that would cause more disruption. I think at 8 months I would apply.

Go for it!

Thank you all.

Flowery I guess I maybe do feel like I would come across as fickle and not committed.

Thank you all. I need to give this some thought. I'm so scared of what my current boss willl say!

You haven't left: you're still working for the same organisation?

Apply! You'll need to state positive reasons.

In my organisation you'd need to get permission to apply as you haven't been in your current role long enough.

I'd want to sound out my chances with the person hiring before having that conversation with current manager as it will impact how they see you.
