Should we 'pay' a work experience girl?

DH has a student coming next week to do some work experience in the office. She will be with us for three days. Does anyone know the general etiquite when it comes to payment? I remember doing work experience and getting nowt (and not expecting anything either), is it still the same?

if she's from a local secondary school def do not pay! Myabe a box of chocs at the end of her stint, but certainly no payment is expected.

I work in a secondary school and our students often come back with their chocs or vouchers at the end of their 1 or 2 weeks......but no one has ever been paid for it!

My son got £50 from the joiners he went to , but the guy did say he was such a hard worker that he could have a job any time he wanted . It made me very proud .

normal not to be paid..especially if it's only very brief

for longer periods might get a small amount towards expenses

dd got a book from an interior designer

no we never do!

we used to INTERVIEW for people to come on work experience (graduates) and they were considered lucky to get it! i always thought that was a bit mean, and would treat them to a lunch out while they were there.

MrsSpoon · 21/03/2007 17:54

She is second year at University, I think. DH hasn't even met her, could be a mistake.

Thanks that's really helpful, it's good to know that nothing in particular is being expected. I think we have decided to wait and see what she is like and reward her accordingly. If it works out well I'm thinking of some vouchers, Top Shop if she is the trendy type or the local book shop if not.

Blimey MerryMarigold you've got to interview them!!!

Thanks again.

sorry, badly written...interviewed them for a placement. then if they got it, would take them to lunch as a small 'thankyou' for putting slog in (altho' tbh i think they usually got more out of the w/e than we did!). very rarely they got offered a job off the placement.

I think it's normal to give them a gift of some kind, so for instance if they worked in a stationery shop they would be given lots of free stationery.

But not every company does this.

MrsSpoon · 22/03/2007 12:14

The sort of business we run there is nothing that we could really give her, although that would have been a good idea. She's doing three days' work so I think if she's good that we would give her £30 in vouchers. Does that sound reasonable? £10 a day?

Too much if you ask me!

But I'm sure she'll be thrilled!
