attending work event outside contracted hours

Basically the above. I loathe my job, its very cliquey / bitchy and basically an unpleasant working environment, but that's whole different thread. Trying to just keep my head down whilst I look for something else.
We have this upcoming away day, on a day that is not my regular contracted day. I reduced my hours and so only work 4 days per week. Feel sick at the thought of going due to above, so I want to ask wise mumsnetters do you think I would be ok to just either phone in sick on my non contracted day ? or offer up some other excuse.
It seems silly to ask, but I have no one else to use as a sounding board really and I need an outside perspective.

I don't think phoning in sick when you aren't is ever a good idea, tbh.

As to whether you should go or not (agreed in advance) that will depend on both your contract, and the culture in your job.
I've worked in PT jobs where I have opted in to going to things that suit work on my non-working days, because they will also let me swap round when it suits me, and treat me well otherwise. However, I've also worked PT for management that try to "insist" I work on a nwd, and that never went down as well.

I would grit your teeth and go along. Think about keeping your job. Even if you leave, you still need a good reference ( or let's say, no bullets to fire at you). Sounds like they will use any excuse, so don't give them anything to fire!

Asking to substitute your nwd so you don't lose it is a reasonable request.

Yes, swap your day. Or get paid for the extra day.

Thanks. I don't really have to go, but I think it would be interpreted as a bit of a statement if I don't go, which I am half not too fussed about as I just want to get the feck out the place really. I guess the best thing to do is just go and show willing.
