Possible school admin job available soon - what would you do?

I have heard on the grapevine that DD's school secretary is retiring soon and that her job will be available.
I'd love to do this job but I haven't seen it advertised anywhere, I don't know if it will be (they may have people in mind already and not want to pay for advertising).
So....... I've typed up a letter to the head, along the lines of 'would you consider me in future if any vacancies arise' and included my CV. It's sitting here in an envelope but I'm suddenly very nervous about sending it!! I don't really want to call as it will be the secretary who will answer, and I don't want to ask how to apply for her job when she hasn't officially announced she is leaving yet! Shall I just send it in to the head?

Just had another thought - perhaps I should hand it to the head personally and mention that I have heard about the vacancy on the grapevine.
What do you think?

Aw, please somebody must have some tips...
Will I look really bolshy and arrogant just applying when it's not been announced?

Go for it YL. He might be glad not to hav eto bother advertising - don't do "grapevine" route as sec might oepn all letters anyway and may be hurt.

do the consider in future route

good luck!

(OR write o sec saying "feck off Granny I want your job!)

I would send it in and see what happens, at my dd's first school, secretarial jobs seem to have gone to those on the PTA.

saadia · 13/03/2007 14:14

Well I'm not really sure what you should do, but if there is a possibility of getting a job you want then I wouldn't worry about looking arrogant.

southeastastra · 13/03/2007 14:15

yes go for it, but check it's not advertised on your local education authority website too

robbosmum · 13/03/2007 14:16

you could always address it as private and confidential, perhaps sec wouldnt open it then?

Y0rkshirelass · 13/03/2007 14:17

LOL @ 'feck off Granny'
Fimbo I am on the PTA so maybe that'll be in my favour.
So do you think just post it to him, or give it to him personally?
(I have been in my current job for yeeeeeeeaars so am completely out of touch with recruitment etiquette, can you tell?)

Done that robbosmum, but I reckon she'll open all post anyway.

I would post it. The mums on the PTA are definately favoured at my dd's school! Good luck!

Fimbo · 13/03/2007 14:20

I would address it personally to him.

Filthymindedvixen · 13/03/2007 14:23

Address the letter
Private and Confidential.
F.A.O Mr Joe Headmaster.

As an admin assistant, I never open letters to my boss marked thus!

earlgrey · 13/03/2007 14:24

Hand it to him. She might let it sit at the bottom of her pile for yonks. I think he'd be grateful, but don't say anything about her position becoming free. At least I wouldn't.

Go girl!!

Y0rkshirelass · 13/03/2007 14:28

Right, ok, thanks for the tips!
