Career Change!

Help I don't know what to do and am seriously thinking about a career change.

I am due to go back to work in a few months time and I am really not looking forward to it one bit. I think I would rather be at home with the kids.

I have 2 daughters, 21/2 and 3 months. I work part time and to be honest it is quite well paid but after I pay for the childminder for three days to look after 2 children there is not much left over.

I have an OU BSc degree and am thinking about applying for teacher training for primary schools. The area I live in falls into the category where it is possible to study the PDGE primary course over 2 years by distance learning and I have the other qualifications for maths and english. However I have not had work experience with children.

When I enquired about this to the University they said the course was very over subscribed and I really should get some experience to stand a chance even if it was to just observe in classes.

I would not be applying for a couple of years anyway until my youngest is a bit older but I had thought about becoming a chilminder in the meantime and could still do this while I studied (although that might not work out with placements). This would let me spend time with the kids, save on childminder costs and give me experience with other children.

Has anyone got any advice?

I think it would be a good idea to go and observe in a school for at least a couple of days and them you might have a better idea of whether you really want to teach.

The training over one year is very intense and you really have to want to do it to stand the pace!!

You can come to my school if you want!
