Hiring manager wants to meet in person to give me interview feedback

I'm not sure what to wear, what to bring, what if anything to ask.

I know I'm majorly overthinking it but I've not had this before.

I've been to quite a few job interviews and never been successful as I'm awful at them (although I'm getting better). I've a specialist qualification and so I'm qualified to do the job and my experience is adequate too.

So when I got a rejection email from HR with the invite to get feedback I did email to ask for some. I felt I needed to as I can't seem to be successful and need the honest truth (I didn't say that in my email).

Anyway the manager replied asking to meet in person! In all my years I've never had this. It's always either via email along with the rejection email or in a short phone call.

So now I'm not sure if this is a formal thing. What to wear. If I should be basically presenting my skills again.

What would you all do? Is it just an informal meeting to get feedback?

I would wear interview clothes

I'd dress like you were going to work, although it probably doesn't matter. Where will the meeting be?

It will be in her office.

It's not another interview. I didn't exactly excel in the interview so it's not a second chance at an interview.

Just an invite to get feedback in person. I've just not had that before as hiring managers are very busy in my field.

So they usually give you 5 mins on the phone at most. She must be decent to take 30 mins (or more) of her time to a rejected candidate.

She interviews a lot so must have to spend a lot of time giving feedback if she offers this option to all of them.

This could be very positive!

Dress for interview (one step above office dress code). Listen actively, taking notes if necessary, and whatever you do, don't interrupt. Summarising the salient points back to her at the end will show you have taken everything on board and will only earn you respect. If it's not covered in the feedback, ask her what she would do in your position to secure a similar role.

Hiring managers like this are worth their weight in gold, so strive to maintain contact afterwards.

Yikes! So I should wear interview type clothes? I was planning to come in in a simple dress and ankle boots!

I will make sure to take notes and be engaged in the conversation.

Yes, dress as if for an interview. She may have another post coming up for which you could be suitable.

I've never heard of this. So definitely make the most of it! I'd definitely wear interview clothes and think of it as a chance to impress. Even though you were unsuccessful, you don't know what's around the corner!

OP, can you recall the questions asked at the interview? If so, have some model answers ready to show you know your stuff should the same crop up. Informal sessions are often a chance to explore your technical capabilities.

I went for my meeting and the manager said I did not have enough experience in that specific field for them to employ me. However, I came across very confident and she asked me to apply for a different position for which my experience was more directly relevant.

She isn't the manager for the other team but has spoken to him and recommended me for interview. I'm the only person being interviewed.

The managers for that job will contact me by Friday to arrange my interview.

I'm not sure how competitive the interview will be. I don't think they're interviewing anyone else as it's not been advertised yet.
