Would you work an extra day for the right job?

Since having dd1 I worked 3 days a week which suited me fine. When I had dd2 I returned at just 2 days per week. The intention was that I increase to 3 days from Sept (I'm a teacher). Since having kids I've had management responsibilities but I gave up my official role as 2nd in dept as I thought I wouldn't be able to do the job properly on 3 days. Now my old job looks like it's coming up again in Sept. My boss has already said he thinks I'm more or less doing the job at the moment anyway and he'd be happy to have me doing it again on 3 days a week. I also feel much more motivated about work than I did say, a year ago.

BUT our Head is down on part-timers generally. He doesn't have any kids of his own and although he 'talks the talk' and says how valuable the part-timers are that wokr at our school I know full well that he doesn't think a 'proper' job can be done part-time. I know it can, and my HoD agrees that I've done more than the actually 2nd in dept in the last year on just 2 days a week compared to the 2nd in dept's 5! There are 3 other Head of depts (Smaller depts admittedly) who work part time (3 or 4 days) and I'm really keen to push myself forward for consideration. As a trump card, I might even consider going up to 4 days. But aprt of me resents the notion that my commitment and effort would automatically be less if I worked just 3 days. The dds are 5 and 17m. Worried that if I go up to 4 days there's no going backbut also scared to miss the boat with this job. ARGGGHHHHHH!

It is something only you can decide, but reading between the lines in your post I think you should offer it - it is frustrating and annoying that you have to but I think you will have a big what if if you don't.

i was looking for a 2 day teaching job when going back to work after ds was born. was offered a 3 day in a really nice school and took that even though it was more than i wanted. so answer to your original question is 'yes'.

however, to me, 4 days off teaching isn't really part-time.... so i wouldn't go up to 4 days if it was me. not until your youngest is a bit older anyway.

you're clearly in a dilemma. i hope you figure out what is best for you

all the best.

Hi moomin, how the hell are ya?
Interesting/exciting! I won't offer any advice, just agree that he IS down on part-timers as you say. It was this which pushed me out - the knowledge that I'd be struggling for any sort of status or recognition for years and years cos my kids came 1st. Good luck in your deliberations; let me know what you decide!

Nosey...is the 2nd in dept leaving then? oooh!

robbosmum · 07/03/2007 14:48

yuo wont get anywhere if you dont apply, and at least someone in authority is on yuor side,,,part time unfavourable in the heads eyes, but financially he would be getting the job done for less, that has to be a financial plus for him

robbosmum · 07/03/2007 14:49

suggest a trial period to prove it!

Moomin · 07/03/2007 16:30

yes, I'd thought about doing it for a trial period if he's arsey about it. A friend of mine reminded me today that 4 days' teaching will mean 4 days' worth of marking and that will really eat into my time at home. At the moment with the responsibilities that I have I can spread the workload out - plus I enjoy it a lot more than tedious mountains of books/essays! But that's by the by. I think I will stick to my guns about the 3 days at least for the next year. The only other contender for the job is working f/t but has only 4 years' experience. Is very capable on admin side but doesn't have the man-management experience that I have either.
