Career Change application

I have working in childcare for over 20 years. I have been thinking about changing my career for a while now and a position as an assistant technical officer in the local hospital has come up. Its entry level and I only need GCSE's as the training is provided.
I have never stepped foot in a medical lab so it's very daunting. Would it be cheeky of me to ask to visit the lab, maybe even as to volunteer to gain a little experience before the closing date?

Of course not! Pre-application visits are encouraged with the NHS I think.

You should definitely go for a pre-application visit. I work in the NHS and as a general rule we won't even interview someone who hasn't been for a visit.

Volunteering probably isn't practical though as it doesn't sound like the kind of job that would need voluntary help. Just visit, be really keen and enthusiastic and ask lots of good questions. Good luck
