Working nights- should you earn extra per hour or same rate as day????

Hope someone can help me.

HAve been offered a job today very local to my house ( therefore involves NO travelling to and from work)

Its night work in a care home, but when I phoned them back this afternoon to check out a few things, it would appear that night staff are payed the same hourly rate as day staff.

I thought that most comapnies pay extra for nights???

I really want the job as it would be perfect- but it would be such a massive drop compared to what im earning now.

any help?

HI tiredemma. it's down to the company what they want to pay - there's no obligation to pay extra for nights or unsocial hours, but most companies find they have to, to attract any workers. If they can staff the night shift on the same rate, they're not going to pay more.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/02/2007 20:14

Agreed pay for carers is crap.

Goosey - I'll remind dh to be to count his blessings

unknownrebelbang · 20/02/2007 20:19

Saggar, that's terrible! Could have been DH attending that job (it wasn't, thankfully).

Our waking nights staff get 30% for working nights.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/02/2007 20:23

More hijacking - have you seen the news today unknown?

Dd's friend's death. The other boy was found not guilty.

IamPotty · 20/02/2007 20:24

tiredemma, I would think about the health implications of working nights before accepting. I think the risks of serious health problesm increases significantly if you work nights. If you have to take the job, I´d look in to this. Good luck. Hope you get more than the daily rate..

unknownrebelbang · 20/02/2007 20:25

Ah, not seen that, no, but knew the trial was this week.

Gives me the shivers just thinking about it - eldest lad is a similar age.

How's your daughter (it was your daughter who was friends with them wasn't it?)

unknownrebelbang · 20/02/2007 20:25

it was your dd - you just said! I can read, honestly......

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/02/2007 20:27

She's OK - had a bit of a sob last night as the details were in the paper. They showed the air-rifle on Midland's Today. It looked huge .

unknownrebelbang · 20/02/2007 20:32

It's a tragic situation.

nikkie · 20/02/2007 21:07

Waking nioghts where I used to work was time and a 1/3 for day staff covering but for regular night staff they were on a lower rate which when paid time+ 1/3 added to the same as day care hours IYKWIM

fannyannie · 20/02/2007 21:09

I'm a night care assistant in a Care Home - and we get paid exactly the same as the day staff - whether it's weekday nights or weekends.......

fannyannie · 20/02/2007 21:11

haha Colditz - just seen your 19.40post

"No way, that'#s crap. most care homes, even really really crap ones, offer an increment for night shifts, in recognition of the fact that night shift in a care home are downright gruelling."

  • well not mine - I guess that sums up my workplace in one short paragraph
chocolatekimmy · 21/02/2007 22:07

You would think it would be more but my friend earns the same as a day rate for care work.

If its what they offer then you either sign up and accept it willingly and put up with it or turn them down

Cailleachna · 08/04/2009 18:10

Do full-time / non-parents work variable shifts? We have a 10% shift allowance worked into our salary, and most people work a day/late/night alternating shift pattern. If you ask for a pattern outside of that, either to work only during the day or only at night (like me) then your money doesn't change. The wages might already have shifts factored in.

cheshirekitty · 08/04/2009 19:56

Worked for bupa a few years ago. When I worked in the hospital I got time and a third for nights, but I think I only got time for working nights in a bupa nursing home.

Health implications for night workers:

Increase in the risk of breast cancer.

Increase in the risk of becoming diabetic.

fledtoscotland · 10/04/2009 23:23

was about to ask if it was a BUPA home as as far as i know they dont pay extra for night shift.

when i was a student nurse we lived opposite a bupa home and they paid minimum wage to all carers for every shift. i worked for bupa agency and got regular shifts in the home but was on three times as much as the regular staff.

brightyoungthing · 12/04/2010 15:33

Nursing homes should pay more to the day staff who often go without breaks and literally work till the sweat is running off. Not to the night staff who sit around all night twiddling there thumbs!!

kaz810 · 03/12/2013 19:41

Hi I was wondering if you found out if bupa pays more for nighta cause I have a interview tomorrow and I will be working both day and night, thanks x
