Help needed regarding overtime and pay please!

Looking for some advice, I have two contracts at work- one permanent 21 hour post and one temporary 15 hour post. Both posts in same base, doing same job. I recently agreed to do overtime and was told I would be paid overtime rate for each hour I worked over 37 a week. I agreed to do a few hours- more as a favour as it was an emergency situation where cover was required. I worked an additional 13 hours each week (meaning I would get paid normal rate for the first hour and then o/t rate for following 12) just checked my payslip and I'm at normal rate for all my hours !! Obviously this has made my pay a lot less than I was anticipating! Called hr who were very unsympathetic and said it's because my total weekly hours are split into the two contracts, therefor I did not work over 37 hours a week (I worked 48!!)
Is it worth pursuing? As in I was told I would get o/t rate and may not have agreed to doing as many if I knew I would be on basic rate? My colleague who has 35hr week permanent contract was paid correctly for her additional hours.

I would try to resolve yourself first. Can you start by

1/. approaching the person who requested you to do the o/t
2/. explain what has happened re wages being wrongly calculated
3/. Ask them to contact payroll

Do you have an email as proof of the request and the approval of o/t? In future if they need you to do o/t they should request in an email

If nothing happens, then take it to your Union.

I would document the situation as:

  1. Description of emergency, reason you were asked to do o/t
  1. Name of person who requested you to do o/t
  1. Date, hours ('I worked from xx Hrs to xx Hrs on 15/Oct/2016")

Don't say this to them!

Just keep talking about how you were happy to help out because of the emergency - even though you had to change your own plans you did it to help out.

Thank you for the advice- I will always make sure I have any "promises" in an email in future.

A few months ago I missed out on renting my dream home because a check from my employer showed that I didn't earn enough (I'm in a low paid job but it's still well above minimum wage) I'm now wondering if this may have been because they only gave details of one of posts. Think I may need to discuss this whole situation with management

Sounds like a good idea I hope they support you.

Come back on if you need further support re that meeting or if you hit a blank getting good your o/t payment sorted. Mean buggers trying to short change you especially after you got them out of a ditch!
