Could my boss stop me getting this job?

I went for a job interview recently and got offered the job. It's the same sort of work that I do now but hours suit me better. Also where I'm working is becoming very risky due to staffing issues. We rarely get breaks. Lots leave. Boss is a cock....ect

I went to the new job on Monday to hand in paperwork. Admin said they'd send me the portal to start the next stage. She said she'd be right on it.

I know present boss is terrible at getting references out when asked. He gave one out recently the day employee left.

Could he refuse to give me one? Dh says he can't give a bad one. He shouldn't do a lot of things but does.

I'm worried he's going to be awkward. I did warn the new place this may happen, as in late reference.

I'll just have to survive on dh's salary until something else comes along if it happens.

Hopefully I'll hear today and won't be so worried?

It's a myth an employer can't give a bad reference. The employer has to give a truthful reference.

Your new employer might be happy with confirmation of dates of employment. Is there anyone else in the firm who can supply that?

I know present boss isn't happy I'm leaving.

One of our team leaders may be happy to do that?

My old boss from years ago is great at references. So at least I don't have to worry about him.

Hi, I've been in a similar situation. What I do is give a former team leader (also my friend) name as referee. When she receives the reference she completes as much as she can and sends it to the new employer. She then tells the new employer in the email that she can only give a personal reference and that she has also forwarded it to hr so that they can complete the formal hr questions. This way I have made sure that a response goes quickly to the new employer.
