So, actually, I see that you have quite a lot of flexibility. Most of us have to ask for the day off. Whereas you just tak it and inform your clients. They might not be happy, but being working parents themselves they will probably understand.

If I were one of the parents I would send my child to you anyway, but I might also ask you to still take them if they pick upp your child's illness.

yes childminding is flexible which is the reason I'm doing it.

but unfortunately I don't get paid for sickness or holidays as I have only term time contracts I miss out on wages 13 weeks a yr {ouch!}

still it's my choice............

that's why I've been enquiring about working elsewhere....

In that case, I think I'd shove 'em off to nursery if they weren't floppy.

Seriously, I let my kids lead. If they feel well enough they want to go to school, swimming, ballet, wherever then I send them. If they are truly miserable, then it's a day off.

yep, best way to play it in my opinion

I only work 3/4 days a week so if I have to have a day or two off due to DS being sick (has only happened twice - so far) I work an extra day the following week or once when he was ill on a Monday but OK by the Tuesday I worked the end of the week rather than the beginning of the week IFSWIM - I think I am luck though that my employer is fairly flexible - it does work both ways though

I haven't had to ask before as kids have never been very ill and my parents look after them if they don't go to school but today they both had an appointment this afternoon and dd1 was off school so I went in this am and asked if they could manage if I went home at lunchtime.Lots of people have time off with kids so they were fine and the Head had to cover me this pm (I'm a TA and noone else can do my job!)

Bozza · 16/02/2007 21:51

but twototango in order to be able to do that you need to have flexible childcare. DD was poorly on Thursday so I took the day as holiday but although she was OK today I couldn't just send her to nursery so I could work the day back. Will do things like this once they are both at school hopefully.

TwoToTango · 17/02/2007 08:27

I know what you mean Bozza, my DS is at school. when he was at Nursery and had chicken pox I had a week off as hol and the other 4 days I needed off with him I worked 1 extra full day and the other 3 days I made up by working an extra 1 or 2 hours a day - took a long time though. its a permant juggling act isn't it!

As people said below most people take annual leave and get their other half to do it and are allowed time unpaid off to arrange other care. That might be for a few days care which costs more than you're getting paid but at least you keep your job!
