Do you think I will get the sack over this?

I started a new job last week at a nursery, i'm the main cook, ok, its not what I wanted, and is only temporary (5 months max) but, it is a job and brings money in,and, I do enjoy it, a couple of the girls are great, and, a few have more faces than the town hall clock etc.

BUT, here is my dilemma

Three week ago dd2 became really ill with flu, raging temperatures, being sick etc.

She went back to school two week ago and was on her second week back when I started job, so I thought we were sorted, BUT Friday morning in the early hours she started screaming with stomach pains, headaches etc and hallucinating, it ended up with dh coming home from work early so that I could rush dd2 to casualty, where it transpires that her first bout of flu never really left her system and it has come back with a vengeance. They discharged her stating I must check her every few hours for a rash because of the strenghth of the antibiotics.

Her temps are still spiking to 40.7 at the max, she is sleeping alot, not eating etc, BUT drinking alot of fluids.

My first and main priority are my children, but, I need to work to bring extra income into the house.

My problem is this (sorry for the long post)

It looks like I DEFINATELY need to have Monday off to take her to the doctors (as requested by hospital) and possibly tuesday and wednesday as hubby cannot get time off work and is on days.

Am I right in thinking I could get the sack for the first time in my working life, OR do you think they nursery will understand?

if they don't understand, you don't want to work for them anyway.

Thank you, it is making me sick with worry, but obviously my first priority is dd2.

I am sure the nursery will understand (you could always offer to get a note from the Dr as proof!

Hope LO is feeling better soon.

It's a nursery. They'\re used to kids. They don't want you bringing in germs for the kids that attend the nursery, and they must have stuff like this happenign all the time.

They'll be cool with it. It's no one's fault. Best of luck.

Agree, they don't understand they're not worth working for. I hope your dd's better soon, sounds awful poor her and you.

They should understand given their business! Just explain the situation and be up front with them regarding the time off that you need - better to be over cautious than try to go in and then having to rush off etc. Hope you're dd starts getting better - what a worrying time for you all.

Can you copy and show your employers relevant paperwork from the hospital, or a hospital/GP phone contact number? Just do it automatically - don't ask if they want to see it - just to reinforce the message that you are acting under hospital instructions?

I agree with the consensus - they are not worth working for if they give you a hard time over this.
