A meeting with my manager - she IS being unreasonable

ok, she'd not my line manager, just much higher up the pecking order than me! I have a very minor amount of responsibility & we were discussing my area of 'expertise', but she came up with the following gems.

  1. those given management points are given them (and money) partly because we should give up our lunch times when extra meetings are needed.
  2. i should be prepared to work extra during my holidays, because i would be paid extra to cover the additional childcare, and this is how i show my leadership qualities.
  3. she would never criticise someone for putting family issues first - but she's chosen not to have a family

i'm thinking i will be dropping a note to my union rep about the attitude of management - this typifies their behaviour, and probably explains why i haven't had any promotions since having a baby!

very unhappy right now!

A typical childless person! They never understand and have no tact at all! She is also a clone!

Holidays are holidays - if you work during your holiday you then have another day to take as well as being paid for the work you've done.

It's her choice not to have a family, she shouldn't have a go at people who do!

Your dinnertime is fr you to take a proper break from your workstation (Health and Safety and all that!)

I am a manager myself, but I have a 6 year old. I must admit that I have moved up the ladder since having him. However, I have been very up front and said that my family come first and nobody but no body will come infront of that - i also don't arse kiss and i think they find that quite refreshing!

She is obvioulsy a very self centred b, and she can't speak to you like thatm especially if she's not your line manager!

Sorry if i've gone on, but people like that really annoy me!!

Good luck!!

Oh dear lord, the helpless ramblings of the childless. Repeat after deep breath, she doesn't know what she is saying, she doesn't know what she is saying.

Except she does, why don't you suggest that as you are very fast and efficient you are capable of getting your job done in the time you are paid to do it and thats why you were given a promotion.

I got this gem from someone else at my grade about not taking lunches because it sets a bad example, eh, I get a whole stonking half hour for my lunch, I'd be likely to get indigestion if I took less time. Then she promptly was off for two weeks because of a flu bug and apparently has had loads of time off because of illness, perhaps if she didn't push herself so much when she was there then she might be able to go in on more days ? Sorry just a personal rant and probably not related ....

I probably wouldn't involve your union unless you have specific examples of discrimination, if you are looking to get promotion in the future, it could get you labelled as a trouble maker.

thanks for the comments, i know what she's like & can be very vindictive so i don't want to make an enemy of her. unfortunately this isn't a one off! there was the time she told me in front of the chairman of governors that i had to go to a meeting & iwan't needed at, when i said no she later told me off for being stroppy, and the time she told me i had to do something i didn't have to do & she hissed in my face 'it's in your job specification' along with jabbing of finger.
i think i shal have a quiet word with the head. if she doea this to the wrong person they could have a nasty lawsuit going, so i think it's only fair to warn him that members of management, in official meetings, are saying such things. i will also keep a record of ALL the times she does things like this - there are hundreds of lesser examples of her behaviour!
can't believe i'm keeping a file on this woman - blah - she is infecting my hard drive!

Ahh, the sort of comments that when you wake up at 2.00am and recall them you seethe and fret and blood may even be know to boil... You'll have to tackle this or go mad.

Btw, Do you work in a school? Those sort of environments tend to be heavily regulated so she is behaving rather recklessly IMO.

kickassangel · 08/02/2007 11:50

yep, i work in a school, therefore if i work holidays i get paid extra but don't get the time back. i know we have loads of holiday, but i frequently work a few days (next week will be 1 or 2 days), the the other days are my time with dd, not for her to comment on.
also, she is trying to prevent certain teachers from getting the extra work at easter as she doesn't like tham, even though they get good exam results!

update!
she has just made someone cry in the staff room by pressuring them to do too much work! the crying woman is someone i have NEVER seen in a state like this, she's just standing there saying 'but when am i expected to do that, when?' cos she hasn't got time to do yet more work!

If she's not your line manager just ignore her! If she feels she needs to approach you with such nonsense then I'd say she has the problem, not you!

If you feel that you would like promotion, I would take this up with your line manager rather than the union. I manage a large team of people and its much easier to deal with one to one approaches than union driven requests. If you would like to get on then be specific and clear and let your manager know. If you are happy where you are then just ignore the foolish woman.

kickassangel · 08/02/2007 13:27

she has now planned a meeting for the lunch time i can't/won't do!

Any progress kickass?

Btw, don't feel obliged to justify your time. I work with a lot of school-based people and IMO the salary takes into account the so-called abundant holidays, seems fair enough to me. (Plus life is peaceful for me when they're all on school hols!)
