bearing in mind that it's internal so I will know the people reading it.

The blurb on the job says the usual shite about needing analytical skills and intellectual integrity. last year I did a masters for whihc I got a distinction. that will go on the qualifications bit of the form, but on the general why do you match the person spec bit does the following (ie explaining what a distinction is) make me sound like a wanker?

My recent study shows strong analytical and academic skills. University x?s assessment criteria note that distinction level work comprises ?Exceptional answers, closely linked to the question set, well-presented and argued with sophistication?and incisiveness?.

I would assume they'd knwo what a distinction is so I wouldn't explain that part. Maybe say something like 'The distinction I was awarded for my masters shows ....

Porpoise · 01/02/2007 10:58

No, sounds like you are very very clever.
Listing the criteria is a good idea - you're not saying you're good, the university is.
Now, f you'd put "My distinction shows that I have exceptional etc etc", that would sound wanky.

PrincessPeaHead · 01/02/2007 10:59

Put it on.
If you were a man you'd put it on.
Countless studies show that women undersell themselves in job applications. It is direct evidence of a third party's views on your ability to do the job.
No question in my mind

funnypeculiar · 01/02/2007 11:01

Sounds good - defn put it on. Agree with porpoise

Marina · 01/02/2007 11:03

Put it on! Are you competing with external candidates too hatwoman? Because they would, not to mention feeling freer to lie because they don't know the recruitment panel!
Go for it

MrsBadger · 01/02/2007 11:13

def put it on, this is the time and place to blow own trumpet.

I wouldnt use quotes though - I'd phrase it

"My recent studies show strong analytical and academic skills. University x?s assessment criteria note that distinction level work comprises exceptional answers, closely linked to the question set, well-presented and argued with sophistication? and incisiveness."

MrsBadger · 01/02/2007 11:13

whoops, meant to delete the ellipsis too.

hatwoman · 01/02/2007 11:17

the dots are because the criteria include "maturity" inbetween sophistication and incisiveness. I don't like that. I'm 36! I don;t hanker after maturity, or rather, I don;t feel the need to prove it - it's clearly included for the 21 year olds.

anyway thanks all for your positive answers. You've given me quite a boost actually! especially the "if you were a man..." quite right!

MrsBadger · 01/02/2007 11:20

yes, but if you're not using quote marks it's not a direct quote so doesn't need the ellipsis.

hatwoman · 01/02/2007 11:28

do you agree that "Maturity" sounds a bit toss?

OP posts:
Porpoise · 01/02/2007 11:33

possibly. could you change it to 'mature thinking'?

Porpoise · 01/02/2007 11:34

or mature reasoning?

NotAnOtter · 01/02/2007 11:36

i would put it

shonaspurtle · 01/02/2007 11:38

Definitely include it. Applications are meant to sound a bit wanky (agree that this makes filling in internal ones tricky).
