Just phoned in to say cant go into school (am teacher) today as dd ill with stomach upset and nursery wont take her. What else am I supposed to do? Surely they must expect this to a certain degree? have family nearby but they can thave dd as they all work. DH had the last day off she was ill so is my turn. God I was so much happier when SAHM!

Oh and will I get paid for having this day off.

Don't feel guilty about it, if your child is ill she needs you and it's not always possible to have a back-up plan. They won't be at all surprised that this has happened, don't schools usually send children home when they're ill? It's also good that you were honest - a lot of people would "take a sickie" in this situation (there was a long-running thread on this a week or so ago).

With regards to pay, check with your manager or HR department (do they have those in schools?). My husband is a teacher and he would get sick pay for himself but not for looking after a sick child, unless it was a clear emergency. But each county council might be different.

It's particularly annoying if you have to pay for nursery AND lose a day's pay.

If you are part-time, could you make up the time by working on a different day (you would have to check if the nursery had a space).

You and your husband taking alternate days off seems a very fair arrangement - it's good that he is prepared to do this. Perhaps you could work out who would lose the most pay by taking a day off and whoever loses the least pay take a day off next time?

Hope she gets better soon!

I NEVER feel guilty over not being in work.

I get paid for days off with ill dc's and I'm a teacher. I know there are some regulations within the council (who employs us)for this, but not sure if it is up to individual schools. It is a nightmare, the whole situation.

Saw something on news a bit back about parents getting paid for this, it was coming from Europe, but haven't seen anything since.

I'm a TA and I get paid if I'm off for hosp appts but havn't needed to take time off for kids being ill as my parents look after them.I have taken time off if I've been up all night with them and got paid then.

Think you are entitled to so many days paid. Loved being with dd today, but what was frustrating was that dd was not particularly poorly, but because she had a stomach upset the nursery imposed the 48hour ban. Although I have not seen any sign of a stomach upset!!!. DH is having her tomorrow.

Fizzbuzz-How are you finding being backat work? I am finding it all a bit stressfull. Hate having a mortgage to pay. Although, dd seems to like nursery.

In our schol, we get the first day off paid, but then any extra days are unpaid, as you are expected to have made arrangements while off on the first day (iyswim).
