Child-friendly work - I have something to pass on!

I have found casual work as an Invigilator - remember those old bats with the squeaky shoes who walk up and down during your exams? Well, get your own back and become one! This last week I've been paid for reading the newspaper for 2 1/2 hours a day! Contact your local secondary school, college or Uni. They need people in Summer of course but also Nov for mocks and Jan for re-takes. Pay is around £7 ph. They train you, it's a doddle. You might (in a school, SATS or GCSEs) find yourself walking up & down for two hours, handing out pencils & taking them to the loo - you get used to the boredom - or at a Uni it's just a question of making sure they don't use a phone so you get to sit & do a crossword or whatever, just so long as you keep an eye on them. Then you collect the papers, hand them over & go home! I thought I'd pass this on in case anyone fancied it ...

oh thank you - what a fab idea!

Does the school employ you direct?

I once came a ccros a from with threads by invigilators, it was hilarious, all the games they play, point scoring for different kinds of pencil cases spotted things like that, exchanging notes on walking formations .

Never see any advertised locally, My Dad was talking about doing this at one point

tearinghairout · 28/01/2007 18:46

Yes, the school or Uni employs you direct. The first job I got was advertised to parents in the school newsletter. One of my colleagues saw an advert in the local rag. But a phone call to your local school/uni would be the way to go.

Skribble, sounds like I'm working in the wrong place. Most of the women at the school make Saddam look benign, but the people at the Uni seem really nice, less to prove I suppose. You might be able to mess about in SATs but I wouldn't want to jeopardise someone's degree & put them off by giggling!

Someone told me that this job used to be done by teachers but now they're not allowed to, so employ casuals as & when. I don't know how true this is.

There were loads of ads for invigilators in our local paper this week.

Skribble · 29/01/2007 09:03

I will look out for ads localy and I promise not to gigle when doing my syncronised squeaking up and down the rows , do tou have to buy your shoes from a special place, there seems to be 3 kinds clicky heels, squeaky soles and sort of slappy slip on ones. Perhaps I could wear my farty sandals .

Skribble, I wish I was working with you... I've worn my daughter's ballet pumps, but this puts you at the disadvantage of being smaller than the brats, so boots are best,I tried some & found they clacked so had to go on the toes, but when you're creeping about on your toes you have to be careful not to lose your balance. It's then hard to look dignified.

Today I trod on a biscuit or something and it made a fart sound. I really wanted to say "I know that sounded like a fart but honestly it wasn't!"

Btw I think I might have latent Tourrettes - today I had to be quiet for two whole hours and the temptation to suddenly go "ATCHOO!" or bark like a dog is getting stronger...
